French is not “foreign” to us!
From the Foundation Stage onwards, children at Widcombe Infant School learn French as a regular part of the curriculum.  We believe that all children can participate and benefit from learning another language, thereby developing their knowledge and understanding of how language works as well as broadening their intercultural awareness.
We aim to develop children’s skills in the key areas of:
- Oracy (speaking and listening)
- Literacy (reading and writing)
- Understanding of the World
The children learn songs and rhymes, and listen to well-known stories, translated into French.  They play circle games, and participate in story making and role play as a way of enabling young learners to memorise the language patterns of an additional language, as well as taking an active part in lessons, and achieving success very quickly.
It is also important to us that children see that languages exist beyond the classroom.  We try to include any languages spoken by our pupils and parents as well as celebrating International Day on a different theme every year to develop global awareness.
